City Talk -- Maine Federation of Firefighters

The Ellsworth Fire Department is making plans!!  The Maine Federation of Firefighters has chosen our fire department to host its 50th annual convention in September, 2013!  Firefighters from around the state (and a few from across the border) will converge on Ellsworth for a weekend of celebration which will include a huge parade, a fireman’s ball, live entertainment, and a muster.

Not only is this a celebration of 50 years with the firefighters federation but the firefighters are using this as an opportunity to showcase the City of Ellsworth and the surrounding region.   There will be many community events including events for children, an arts and craft show, and a comedy show.    There are also plans to involve businesses and community organizations in promoting their wares or raise funds for their foundation.

This event could draw up to 10,000 firefighters and their families so planning for such an event is no small task.  It will take the support of the entire community to make sure that this is an event to remember.  Fundraising events have already started.  A few that are in the works are:   A 3-Prize Raffle which includes as a grand prize, a 2012 Polaris Ranger Side-by-Side 4 wheeler.  There is also an official EFD Cookbook and t-shirts for sale.  A big event coming up in October is the EFD Haunted House to be held at the Bryant E. Moore School building.  It seems that there is a ghost at the school that is very upset about the fact that the City has built a new K-8 school.  A “tour of the old school” will be open for all ages.  And there will be many more fundraising events over the next year so be sure to stay up to date by visiting the City of Ellsworth website, or the Fire Department and City facebook pages for more information.

On a more serious note, through the efforts of the Ellsworth Fire Department, the City has received a small portion of structural steel from the World Trade Center. This steel will be memorialized at the fire station and will serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made during and after the World Trade Center terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.

The fire department is planning an escort through Ellsworth on Sunday, September 11th, beginning at 2 pm at Superior Docks, 420 Christian Ridge Road. From there the steel will be escorted down the Bangor Road, through State Street, continuing onto Oak Street, down Main Street and into the City Hall parking lot via Franklin Street. An official acceptance ceremony will be held at the fire station beginning roughly at 2:30 or immediately after the escort is complete. The public is encouraged to attend the acceptance ceremony. The escort will be restricted to fire, law enforcement, and EMS personnel only.

Although no final plans have been made yet as to how the steel will be displayed, the
Ellsworth Fire Department will store the steel at the fire station for the public to see until a fitting memorial can be made.
